VI.01.38. Read The Fortunes of Captain Blood

Date Accomplished: ???

The Fortunes of Captain Blood: P. F. Collier Edition

My Sabatini Journal

“Battles are not won by heroics, my friend, but by calculation.” (54)

“We are all of us self-interested, and none are more so than those who … are ready to accuse others of that fault.” (89)

“It persuaded Tim of that streak of chivalry of which Blood had boasted, a quality which the burly master of the Heron could not help regarding as a deplorable flaw in a character of so much rascally perfection.” (233)

The Fortunes of Captain Blood was another collection of short stories following the career of Peter Blood.  While one can tell that Sabatini was starting to run out of ideas for Captain Blood and his crew, this book still had some great stories in it.  I would have to say that the story ‘Sacrilege’ has got to be one of my favorite Sabatini stories to date.  The ending was such a surprise that I had to read it twice to make sure I understood what had happened.

The Fortunes of Captain Blood

Unlike Captain Blood Returns, it seems that Sabatini wrote the stories in The Fortunes of Captain Blood to take place consecutively.  Not to say that either way is better, it was just easier to place The Fortunes of Captain Blood in the Captain Blood timeline.

All in all, a good book, but not one of Sabatini’s best.  Then again, I believe I have Sabatini fatigue at the moment, and it may be a while before I read another of his books.
